Enjoy the atmosphere of the old days, the delicacies of our café, changing experiences and events in a log building that was built in 1906 and used to be Vihasjärvi School.

In the beautiful scenery of Orivesi, in the Vihasjärvi village, lies a unique place where time slows down and the mind rests. Within the historical Vihasjärvi school, you’ll find Wihasjärvi Kahwila, a cafe that offers delicacies made from pure local ingredients that can be enjoyed on the spot or taken home. You can also visit the Wanhan Tawaran Kauppa, which is a shopfull of beautifully aged items. Enjoying the changing art exhibitions is a necessity as well.

Wihasjärvi 1906 also hosts various events for the whole family. If the traditional landscape entices you to stay longer, accommodation is available both in the school building and in old log sheds.

Art Experiences

Art has been a significant part of the activities at the old Vihasjärvi school, the home of Wihasjärvi 1906. Over the years, numerous exhibitions have been seen in the school premises. Visitors have been delighted to admire visual art, ceramics, and sculptures by splendid Finnish artists.

Local Product Shop – Traditional Crafts and Food Made from Local Ingredients

At the Local Product Shop you’ll find delicacies prepared by hostess and a skilled chef Aija Viitaniemi. All products are handmade using pure ingredients from the local nature.

The Local Product Shop also serves those who enjoy traditional crafts. Household goods and textiles take you on a journey back in time when handicraft skills were valued, and natural products were used as materials.

Antique Shop – Selection of Treasures Weathered by Time

In this shop, every item has a story to tell. From the selection of vintage goods, you’ll find well-preserved and unique items that reflect a lived life. The selection is constantly being updated, so there’s always something new on display.

Occasions

The old Vihasjärvi school building and the surrounding garden offer magnificent historical settings for various occasions. The downstairs classrooms or the upstairs hall can accommodate groups of fewer than 30 people.

For occasions, we provide the venue, chef-prepared food, waitering (if possible) and table setting.

Catering services, including transportation, are also available outside the Vihasjärvi area. In such cases, tableware is not included.

Sauna

Come and enjoy an atmosphere of the yard sauna and gentle baths. The sauna is heated by separate order for both guests and external customers.

Wihasjärvi Café – Pure Flavors and Interesting History

The enticing aroma of coffee and freshly baked goods leads you to Wihasjärvi Café. You can indulge in savory and sweet pastries created by chef Aija, as well as beautiful chocolate confections and juice made from berries and wild herbs. The café’s location in the old Vihasjärvi school ensures an atmospheric setting.

All café products are also available for takeaway, and you will find a variety of deli items in the Local Product Shop. Every treat in the café and shop is made with love using pure ingredients from the school’s own garden or local producers.

Accommodation surrounded by traditional landscapes

Apartment and shed accommodation located along good transport links is located in the over 120-year-old Vihasjärvi school in Orivesi. Apartment Pietilä, once serving as a residence for former teachers, has preserved the atmosphere of the past. Designed for three guests, the well-equipped space has been fully renovated with modern amenities. The apartment has a private entrance from the beautiful garden. Guests also have access to a traditional Finnish sauna, which is located in the courtyard.

More adventurous nights can be spent in the well-maintained log sheds near the school building. In the past, they provided teachers a place for sleep on warm summer nights. Today the sheds have electric heating in case of cooler weather. There are two well-equipped sheds, Kulta-Nisula, Wirtanen and Lemmikki, each accommodating two guests.
