Vaikko Riverside Resort is a small, family-owned business offering high-end, luxury travel experiences in Finland’s Nordic/Arctic region. With us, you can immerse yourself in the pure beauty of nature and discover its miraculous effects.

As an international travel destination, we are committed to responsible and ecological tourism. We have been awarded the prestigious Green Key and Sustainable Travel Finland certifications, and we continuously work to preserve nature and its resources for future generations.

You can enjoy the peace and lake and river rapids landscapes of Kärenkoski by booking Wilderness Boutique Cabins, saunas, a hot tub, huts, and/or dining services at the forest restaurant for yourself or your group. You can explore the wilderness either on your own or in our guided tours. Find out more under the section “Nature Experiences.” Vaikko Riverside Resort offers more than 10 rental properties: 7 wilderness cabins, a café, a restaurant, huts, and saunas. A new larger log house is under construction.

White water rafting/canoeing

A guided white-water rafting and canoeing adventure is full of excitement and stunning scenery. Be prepared for a thrilling day! You can choose an adventure lasting either 3 or 6 hours. Our expert guides ensure a safe and unforgettable canoeing experience. The program includes all the equipment needed for a safe day on the water and is suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Marvel at the breathtaking surroundings as you journey from the rapids to the lush riverbanks. This whitewater rafting and kayaking expedition offers thrilling moments and a rejuvenating outdoor experience.

During the adventure, we provide a delicious lunch for you to enjoy.

The program begins at Makkarasärkkä, where the guide will outline the schedule, provide instructions, and conduct a safety briefing. From there, we’ll drive to Kusiaiskoski, where the canoes await. Here, you’ll receive final guidance before embarking on your adventure.

Fishing and hunting

Explore the abundant fishing spots surrounding Vaikkojoki. Just steps away from our cabins, a lively rapid flows year-round, offering ample opportunities to reel in salmon, whitefish, zander, pike, and perch.

During winter, we also organize guided ice fishing trips on the frozen surface of a nearby lake.

On our hunting grounds, you can hunt rabbits and grouse. Additionally, hunting for moose as guests of the local hunting club is also an option.

Hiking and biking

Stars and darkness admiring

Admire the stars and listen to their stories – discover the starry sky magic. The tips given by URSA help us find the path to the starry sky’s wonderful world – even without any extra equipment!

In April, the starry sky presents exceptionally delightful moments, even to the naked eye. We provide a wide array of experiences, catering to various passions, from stargazing on a yoga mat to moonlight kayaking amidst enchanting landscapes, or even a journey to the traditional Koirakivi-rock beneath the shimmering stars.

Experience the celestial wonders at their finest! April and September-October mark the pinnacle for stargazing enthusiasts. To delve deeper into the cosmos, Ursa’s virtual star nights and the Taivaanvahti website serve as invaluable resources as we embark on our journey to marvel at the stars together.

NOTE: Kindly keep in mind that the stars are only visible when the sky is clear of clouds.

Northern lights photography

We organize Aurora Borealis photography trips/courses during the winter months for those interested in the subject.

A local photography professional knows the best places to view and photograph the northern lights. With his tips, you can capture the most amazing pictures of the northern lights!

Kalevala-Themed Dinner

Book a 3-5 course dinner and experience the beauty of a traditional Finnish kota-hut in a completely new way.

All dishes are prepared by our own chef using local ingredients. The menu changes seasonally, reflecting the offerings of each harvest period. Nature, with its seasonal variations and annual rhythm, plays a central role in everything we do, including the food we prepare with great care.

Allergies and dietary requirements are naturally taken into account when preparing meals. Please inform us of any when making your reservation.

Wilderness Boutique Cabins

Warmly welcome to experience the untouched tranquility of the nature at Vaikko Kärenkoski!

Well-equipped log cabins with sun porches (4-5 persons/cabin) are nestled in the beautiful Vaikko landscapes. Each cabin boasts a minimum of 200 meters of private shoreline. The rapids between the lakes flow freely even during the winter.

The cabins are spread over a two-kilometer stretch along the river and lakeshores. Privacy and accessibility are guaranteed.

The log cabins  feature a fully equipped kitchen, wood-fired sauna, and fireplace. The bath rooms are crafted with Finnish stone and Spectrolite. Rowboats, canoes, bicycles, traditional Laplanders’ huts with fireplaces, and a hot tub are available for residents’ use. Electric cars can be charged for an additional fee. Two grill huts are also available for all our guests.

Pets, allergy sufferers, and special groups are welcome; please inform us in advance.
